The inspiration behind this Scotland bridal session all started when we stumbled upon this location. This beautiful forest in Scotland felt like an enchanted wood in a storybook. It just felt completely magical…huge, majestic trees, little glades full of wild ferns, and golden rays of sun peeking through tree branches. Bewitching blooms created by Pyrus Botanicals were the most beautiful addition to the setting and blended in so seamlessly, and the incredible bespoke gold-embroidered dress by Rowan Joy complemented the atmosphere of spellbinding romance. And to complement it all, the hair and makeup by the amazingly talented AMM Hair & Makeup Team made the lovely Kirsty truly look like a woodland faery. We are so grateful we get to photograph weddings and bridal sessions in Scotland. It really is a magical country.

Nicole and Sage are two such lovely souls. They are madly in love with each other and it shows. Sage’s one request for their engagement photos was to include his 1951 Chevrolet pick-up, which was given to him by his late grandfather. And we’re so glad he requested it, as it brings such a fun, personal element to the first part of their session. Then we had an outfit and location change that both brought a little more drama (keep scrolling to see Nicole’s red skirt…INCREDIBLE!!!). These two will be getting married this summer at the Big Yellow Barn in Bozeman and we know their day is going to be full of incredible moments bursting with love (if their engagement photos were any indication!). We can’t wait to work with Bash Bozeman on it! Also, Nicole’s makeup for this session was done by the incredibly talented Fumi Makeup.

Sage acquired a unique perspective on life as he was born and raised on a farm in the Treasure State. But there were parts of Montana that he took for granted. He grew a deeper appreciation for his home after moving away and missing the beauty of the Big Sky state.

Nicole had never visited Montana before meeting Sage, but the girl from the Sunshine State had always been enamored with Big Sky Country. During her first trip north, she fell in love with its majestic mountains, vast landscape and the blue sky that seemed to stretch for forever.

The pair enjoys coming north whenever they can to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Most of their seasonal trips end up somewhere in Montana. Sage has been able to share his favorite parts of the state with Nicole. They have hiked in Glacier National Park numerous times, spent time around Whitefish and Kalispell, screamed in below-zero temperatures at a Cat-Griz game and have enjoyed tasting various breweries across the state.

Sage had always wanted to get married in Montana, but he didn’t share that thought with anyone. His immense love for Nicole grew even more when she asked if they could get married at a venue that sports a 406 area code. When they found the Big Yellow Barn outside of Bozeman, they knew it would be the perfect spot to share their special day.

Wedding creatives frequently look at the amazing work being produced by others in their field and feel a pang of jealously. For us in Montana, it’s hard not to yearn after the warm, vibrant springtimes that seem to arrive everywhere else and yet evade us. Early spring in Montana is often cold, dreary, and seemingly unending, and yet the stark, muted landscape can be strikingly beautiful if looked at with the right eyes. We began to understand that rather than fighting against the innate bleakness of the season, we needed to embrace it and look beneath the surface of the location and let its more subtle beauty shine. The soft pastel colors of the riverside and the subdued, restrained light of the season became our inspiration. After relaying our vision and inspiration to Darci of Greenwood Events, she expertly brought that vision to life. She wove the grey, slate blue and blush colors of the river rocks into the design of the tablescape and florals. A flowing silk table runner and linens from Tono & Co. mimicked the movement of the river. Cast Calligraphy’s exquisite paper goods played on the idea that an early mountain spring can be a monochrome season splattered with wet snow, yet under the surface it holds the promise of renewed life.

Thanks to the Anne of Green Gables movies and books, it has been a dream of mine to visit Prince Edward Island since I was a little girl. Those movies and books hold such a special place in my heart. The island has been idealized in my mind for so long that I was worried experiencing it in person wouldn’t meet the expectations I had been building since my childhood. However, all my girlhood dreams came true this past June when my bosom friend Cryssy, her little girl and I took a girl’s trip to the island. Cryssy is a true kindred spirit who also has a love for “that Anne girl.” After over a year of careful planning, we made our way to Boston, drove up through Maine, across New Brunswick and then over the Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island. We spent a glorious week on the island and explored its beautiful shores, farmland, lighthouses, Anne of Green Gables sites, and the beautiful city of Charlottetown. After scouring for places to stay, we found the most perfect cottage on Airbnb with the most sweeping, unimpeded view over a lush green field and out to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. What a week it was. I took early morning runs on the famous red dirt roads out to the nearby lighthouse. We sat in rocking chairs on the front porch and watched thunderstorms come in over the gulf. We made the most delicious meals and ate them on the old wooden table in our 1800s farmhouse. We had a scrumptious afternoon tea at Dalvay by the Sea. We saw Anne of Green Gables: The Musical. We made a pilgrimage to both the Anne of Green Gables Museum and Green Gables itself (it really exists!). We saw thousands and thousands of wild lupine in every color of pink and purple imaginable. We explored little fishing villages. It was truly a kindred spirits trip, and it instantly became one of those special memories of a lifetime. But I already know it’s not the only time I will visit PEI…I’ve been with my “Diana,” now I need to go with my “Gilbert.” For the full effect, I’d highly recommend listening to this music from the Anne of Green Gables movies while scrolling through the post. Trust me. It just makes it 😉 All images were taken on 35mm Fuji 400H film.
