Wedding creatives frequently look at the amazing work being produced by others in their field and feel a pang of jealously. For us in Montana, it’s hard not to yearn after the warm, vibrant springtimes that seem to arrive everywhere else and yet evade us. Early spring in Montana is often cold, dreary, and seemingly unending, and yet the stark, muted landscape can be strikingly beautiful if looked at with the right eyes. We began to understand that rather than fighting against the innate bleakness of the season, we needed to embrace it and look beneath the surface of the location and let its more subtle beauty shine. The soft pastel colors of the riverside and the subdued, restrained light of the season became our inspiration. After relaying our vision and inspiration to Darci of Greenwood Events, she expertly brought that vision to life. She wove the grey, slate blue and blush colors of the river rocks into the design of the tablescape and florals. A flowing silk table runner and linens from Tono & Co. mimicked the movement of the river. Cast Calligraphy’s exquisite paper goods played on the idea that an early mountain spring can be a monochrome season splattered with wet snow, yet under the surface it holds the promise of renewed life.

Thanks to the Anne of Green Gables movies and books, it has been a dream of mine to visit Prince Edward Island since I was a little girl. Those movies and books hold such a special place in my heart. The island has held such an idealized place in my mind for so long that I was worried experiencing it in person wouldn’t meet the expectations I had been building since my childhood. However, all my girlhood dreams came true this past June when my bosom friend Cryssy, her little girl and I took a girl’s trip to the island. Cryssy is a true kindred spirit who also has a love for “that Anne girl.” After over a year of careful planning, we made our way to Boston, drove up through Maine, across New Brunswick and then over the Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island. We spent a glorious week on the island and explored its beautiful shores, farmland, lighthouses, Anne of Green Gables sites, and the beautiful city of Charlottetown. After scouring for places to stay, we found the most perfect cottage on Airbnb with the most glorious unimpeded view over a lush green field and out to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. What a week it was. I took early morning runs on the famous red dirt roads out to the nearby lighthouse. We sat in rocking chairs on the front porch and watched thunderstorms come in over the gulf. We made the most delicious meals and ate them on the old wooden table in our 1800s farmhouse. We had a scrumptious afternoon tea at Dalvay by the Sea. We saw Anne of Green Gables: The Musical. We made a pilgrimage to both the Anne of Green Gables Museum and Green Gables itself (it really exists!). We saw thousands and thousands of wild lupine in every color of pink and purple imaginable. We explored little fishing villages. It was truly a kindred spirits trip, and it instantly became one of those special memories of a lifetime. But I already know it’s not the only time I will visit PEI…I’ve been with my “Diana,” now I need to go with my “Gilbert.” For the full effect, I’d highly recommend listening to this music from the Anne of Green Gables movies while scrolling through the post. Trust me. It just makes it 😉 All images were taken on 35mm Fuji 400H film.

The moments before a bride gets into her dress are some of our favorite. They are full of such sweet anticipation. We love when brides take the time to have a few minutes of quiet, peaceful reflection before the wedding day takes off into a whirlwind of non-stop activity!

Nasim & Amir’s Hyalite engagement session up at Hyalite Reservoir was a combination of epic scenes, wild snowstorms, and frigid temps. Although we all couldn’t feel our faces after we were done, it was so worth it to get these images of these love birds. We can’t wait to photograph their wedding at the Story Mansion later this month and work with the wonderful Katalin Green.

The whole experience made me think of this quote: “If you want to see the sunshine, you have to weather the storm.” – Frank Lane

This so perfectly sums up what marriage is often like…there will be times when the storm is fierce…but when you hold on through the rough spells, the rewards are extraordinary.
