Nasim & Amir’s Hyalite engagement session up at Hyalite Reservoir was a combination of epic scenes, wild snowstorms, and frigid temps. Although we all couldn’t feel our faces after we were done, it was so worth it to get these images of these love birds. We can’t wait to photograph their wedding at the Story Mansion later this month and work with the wonderful Katalin Green.

The whole experience made me think of this quote: “If you want to see the sunshine, you have to weather the storm.” – Frank Lane

This so perfectly sums up what marriage is often like…there will be times when the storm is fierce…but when you hold on through the rough spells, the rewards are extraordinary.

Elegant Chicago Engagement Session

Tanuja & Amit met in Chicago after they both moved there for medical school. Their paths crossed one night at a party neither of them wanted to go to, and after a crazy night of trying to get home, they exchanged numbers and started building a friendship. The two eventually fell in love with each other and Chicago, so it only made sense that they used the beautiful city as a backdrop for their engagement session. They had plans to move back to Amit’s home state of Florida shortly after their engagement session, so they wanted these photos to represent their time in the city and their love that blossomed there.

Chicago has an amazing array of locations to choose from for photo sessions, from quiet gardens to that famous city skyline. Tanuja and Amit wanted contrasting spots that showed off the best the city has to offer. We started in the peaceful woodland setting of the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool for some more naturally romantic photos and then finished the evening with a striking statement of the two in front of the Chicago skyline dressed to kill. These two have a classic, elegant style that blended perfectly with both locations we visited, especially Tanuja’s stunning black geometric dress from Guess she wore on our last stop of the evening at North Avenue Beach.

Scotland Wedding Inspiration

This Scottish collaboration is one we’ve been waiting to share for what seems like forever. We’re overjoyed that this Scotland wedding inspiration is currently featured in Magnolia Rouge‘s gorgeous print magazine, which you can order here. When we ventured over to the UK last year, we were able to connect with one of the most creative and talented floral teams we’ve ever met, the incredible Fiona and Natalya of Pyrus. Their extraordinary creations were the stuff of dreams, and together we created a shoot that still makes us feel like we’re in a dream. With couture dresses from Rowanjoy, bespoke tweed from Walker Slater, and the gorgeous backdrop at Kelburn Castle & Estate, this shoot will forever be one of our absolute favorites. Our gorgeous model Mhairi looked like a Scottish faerie queen walking through her woodland realm. We everything about this day. A special thanks to makeup artist Janise Maxwell and hair stylist Esther Brown for their gorgeous artistry.

This shoot had three distinct looks, so without any further ado, please enjoy the first look! The second installment of this shoot will be published next Wednesday!

Words from Pyrus: Some of our best collaborations have sprung from social media channels and this shoot with Orange Photographie was one such introduction. Montana-based Samantha and Reid were looking for like-minded creatives to work with on their travels through Scotland and, after putting our heads together, we decided to take a more conceptual direction for a wedding shoot at the Kelburn Estate in Ayrshire.

We wanted to show a new and unexpected side to Scotland beyond the tartan and Highland scenery most people associate with it, particularly in the wedding industry. More and more frequently we are approached by couples that are looking for a different and creative way to approach their wedding, asking us for botanical installations and sculptural pieces to dress the ceremony and venue. For this Scotland wedding inspiration, we were inspired by the Graffiti Project which dominates the walls of Kelburn Castle and how this extraordinary piece of contemporary art both challenges and at the same time sits peacefully within the natural landscape surrounding it. Taking bold, primary colours from the mural we wanted to explore that maverick spirit and bring a sense of the unexpected and surreal to the glen.

Samantha and Reid were open to and excited by our ideas to incorporate land art and site specific pieces into the shoot and sourced beautiful dresses from Rowanjoy in Edinburgh, a world away from the traditional bridal gown. Contemporary tweed pieces by Walker Slater added an edge to the look while retaining a sense of the traditional, showcasing local artisan techniques.

For the bouquets we chose a softer and more romantic feel, combining blooms from our flower garden with foraged treasures from the woodlands for a sense of time and place, and taxidermy wings for an unconventional touch. We are influenced by nature in its entirety and often use materials such as wings, seaweed or found objects like skulls in our work; we find this complexity more interesting and contemporary than flowers alone.
